Beauty alone is not enough

September 12, 2018

It’s been a dry hot summer in Britain.

Mardale Green in the Lake District had to be vacated by its residents in 1935 to make way for a reservoir to provide water to the nearby towns.

Now the reservoir is almost dry and the ruins of the erstwhile houses are visible again for the first time in all those decades.

A lady, now in her 90s, remembers her life there as a child; the wild flowers and the beauty of the landscape. She remembers hearing the laughter of children and the longing to play with them to ease her loneliness. The cries were not from children, it was birdsong.

Beauty alone is not enough said she.
