Multisampler

Advantages

The Multisampler is a specialised sampler for sludges and sediments, this piston type sampler gives good material retention and undisturbed samples, it is Ideal for visual identification, classification and sub-sampling for environmental and agronomy research. Suitable for sampling lakes, wetlands, river beds and sludges within a tank. The Multisampler comprises of a transparent acrylic tube with a piston arrangement. It captures samples within the tube which can be visually inspected. The Multisampler can only be used for the top metre of sediment. The cutting head can easily be exchanged with one which contains a check valve to prevent the sample from falling out. The Multisampler can be easily disassembled and apart from the acrylic tube (which can be capped for transport); all remaining parts are stainless steel for easy decontamination.

Van Veen Grab

The Van Veen Grab is an easy to use surface sampler for river and lake beds, giving you a quick indication of sediment type. The Van Veen Grab gives you a semi disturbed sample of river and lake beds and large sumps. The Van Veen Grabs take a surface sample only, they are suspended by wire so can easily be deployed. Ekman Sampler

Ekman Grab

This stainless steel sampler is intended for use in soft sediment that is free from debris and plant growth. Samples can be taken from top layers and spring loaded jaws prevent loss of material as long as there are no small stones or stalks to prevent closure. A sample can be viewed through an opening in the top before the sample is retrieved. The 3.5 litre sampler comes complete with synthetic line to reach a depth of 30m.

Beeker Sampler

The Beeker Sampler is a very sophisticated sediment sampler; it can be used to take undisturbed samples of sediments and submerged soils. Completely undisturbed samples are captured in an acrylic sampling tube and an inflatable bladder resides within the cutting shoe to ensure perfect sample retention. The Beeker sampler can be inserted in a closed position to the required sampling horizon then opened. The Beeker sampler is perfect for a visual assessment of the often critical water/sediment interface. Sub-samples can easily be obtained by a laboratory partitioning system.

Flap Gouge Auger

The Flap Gouge Auger is for sampling in dry or wet material to a depth of 2 metres. The slender construction allows for ease of penetration in sludges, sediments, powder, grain, granulates (< 3mm) and pastes. This makes it ideal for taking samples in drums, tanks and bags.

The right equipment for the job

Whether you classify sediment as a weak soil or all soils as sediment what's certain is to collect samples when the soil is wet, soft and non-cohesive, will be challenging and retention can be difficult so the sample will need to be enclosed or captured in a liner. Poor samples lead to errors in analysis and inaccurate conclusions.

Sediments present special challenges and using the right equipment will save you time, money and mistakes. Sediments are weak and non cohesive so retention of the sample is often difficult which means that it must be enclosed or captured in a liner as incorrect samples lead to errors in analysis and therefore the conclusions. Peat soils can often be captured in gouge augers or a peat or Russian corer but where the sediments are very sloppy and especially when sampling below the water table different equipment is required.

Mostly these samples are taken with a piston sampler such as the Multisampler, Beeker sampler or Stitz corer.They will be inserted in the material in a closed position and only opened at the start of the desired horizon. These samplers are also very useful in capturing the water/sediment interface which is often of immense importance to researchers to test if the contaminant is contained or occurs in both materials. Mostly, the use of these piston type samplers produce a virtually undisturbed sample but for rough and ready work Van Veen type samplers can also be used.
