Window Sampling

The Benefits of our Window Sampling System

The Van Walt percussion window sampling kit is a powerful, non destructive, low disturbance site investigation tool. It uses laser cut, high entry efficiency samplers in our unique, robust, no maintenance, left hand thread RD32 connection. It is ideal for sampling and research in sites with restricted access, where there is the potential for contaminated samples or for exploration of base metals and mineral deposits, like gold and other precious metals.

Simply - the best window sampling system currently on the market.

Window Sampling System

Advantages

Window Sampling sets are for professionals who regularly drill, sample or who are involved in mineral exploration in hard soils which may contain rubble and/or stones or who are working in difficult to access sites.

Window sampling is a technique whereby steel tubes (with cut out windows) are driven into the soil with a mechanical (petrol, electric or hydraulic) hammer and extracted manually or hydraulically.

The samplers will show a virtually undisturbed horizon for logging and (sub) sampling. Depending on geology they can achieve sampling depths of up to 10 metres although more realistically, if used day in day out, are very suitable for repetitive use to 6-8 metres. A different type of attachment can also be used to retrieve the samples in a liner.

A typical window sampling set to achieve depths of 6 metres will weigh in the region of 200 kg with the heaviest item being the hammer at 25 kg. As such it is a very mobile system which can be used in remote and difficult to access sampling points.

Our window sampling sets have been sold across the world to researchers, geologists, geographers and archaeologists to name but a few. More recently they have been used by mineral exploration companies who have found them of particular benefit in sampling to the saprolite horizon.

Van Walt Window Sampling materials have many features that make the system special:

Small & portable so can be transported to and from sites in an ordinary car or van. The samplers are driven into the soil with a percussion hammer such as the Atlas Copco Cobra TT.

Produced of steel and available in different diameters and lengths so are ideal for sampling up to 10 metres in depth in hard soils that may contain rubble, bricks or stones.

The RD 32 rope thread connection is very strong. The rope thread is in one piece so has no moving parts.

Maintenance free unlike the older type M-20 or M-22 threaded studs

Connection is by one-piece coupling sleeves.

Sampler top is hollow to maximise the percussive action. The top sections are manufactured as one piece and are pressed then welded onto the sampler for added strength.

Gouges are laser cut and shaped specifically to improve insertion speeds, making it the ideal system for repetitive sampling.

Cutting heads are manufactured of hardened steel and rigidly tested to withstand 30 minutes on reinforced concrete.

Uniquely designed window-less core sampler for undisturbed samples 100cm long in sleeve.

Samples are captured in an undisturbed way for on-site profile evaluation.

Manufactured for strength but of a minimum thickness to ensure ease of application and minimum sample disturbance.

Benefits:

  • Custom sets available to cater for your needs
  • On-site training provided with every set

The Van Walt unique Foil Liner

To capture a profile in a liner there is a window-less sampler which uses a unique foil liner.

The foil liners are cheap, easy to store and transport and designed to make it easy to retrieve the sample, unlike the more expensive rigid PVC liners used on other systems.

The Lost Cone Drilling Set

Advantages

The Lost Cone Drilling Set is a fast and efficient way to install a 1 inch monitoring well when there is no need to take a sample. It is particularly relevant for stony soils or gravels. A specially designed cone is mechanically hammered into the soil to produce a very straight bore hole. Using this equipment makes it easier to reach depths up to 10m and the friction on extracting the casing is reduced. After drilling the 'lost' cone is left in the soil. This has no environmental impact as the construction material of the cone is found in soils naturally.

Principle of operation:

A hollow casing is fitted with a lost point and hammered, meter by meter, into the ground until the installation depth for the well is reached. Your choice of 1" well is then lowered through the casing and the casing retrieved to leave the well in place. The well can then be sampled and purged in the usual way.

Benefits:

  • Ideal for inserting groundwater monitoring wells in stony soils and gravels
  • Non-toxic, environmentally neutral lost cone point that can safely be left in the soil
  • A fast and efficient drilling method
  • Available as a complete set
  • Easy to transport
  • The special shape of the lost cone ensures there is less friction when the casing is inserted and extracted again
  • Ideal and safe for making holes for the installation of explosives in mining.

Set contents:

  • Percussion hammer
  • Striking pins
  • Drive-cone holder for percussion casing
  • Steel casing
  • Pulling equipment
  • Lost cones
  • Various accessories.
