The Van Walt ‘safe’ word – Auger!

April 8, 2015

You would be surprised if we didn’t tap into some of the hype surrounding the multi-million dollar block-buster: Fifty Shades of Grey and, although you may be surprised at the ‘link’, please give us the chance to explain.

In case you are unaware of the plot of the movie – young, innocent girl meets boy; he’s handsome, successful and rich; girl falls for boy; boy falls for girl; but as things hot up, girl quickly learns there’s more to boy than she expected; boy likes to push the boundaries; but true love wins through; both get exactly want they want and (at the end of the trilogy) we get a happy ever after ending!

So how can we apply this high octane tale of love, lust and happy endings to our auger? Well a Van Walt auger looks plan and simple but it is the result of many years’ research and development. It didn’t get this way by chance! All our auger heads have been hand-crafted in the Netherlands so there is more to them than first meets the eye, these augers are the elite of hand sampling tools.

Although simple in application our augers are rich in diversity, coming in a variety of shapes, sizes, types and lengths – so whatever floats your boat or depending on your soil conditions and application, we have a head for you. Extension rods can be added; we sell these augers individually or in specialist sets: Bailer Boring Sets, Stepwise Sampling Sets and Split tube sampler for top layers to name a few. We offer simple single head, handle and extension carriers and if pain is your thing, we offer some relief: our Ergonomic Auger Set, is for those who hand auger extensively as the handle is designed so that the operator works with a good posture to minimise strains on shoulders, back, arms and wrists.

So our augers although simple are extremely efficient and with extensions our augers can sample down to 5 meters – deep by any standards. So although it’s easy to be seduced by mechanical devices we’ve found that a sample will often be retrieved more quickly and with less effort with the right hand auger if you remember the important principles: sample per layer, never mix your soil horizons and be sure to avoid the contamination of deeper layers.

So use one of our hand augers, an auger designed for your soil conditions and you will inevitably get a happy ending. And, because they are made so well, they last so long and you will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship. That’s why when we are approached by a tall dark stranger wanting ‘it all’ for their soil sampling research, our safe word is always: auger!
