Monday, 3rd August 2020, David van Walt starts with Van Walt Ltd in a position as joint Managing Director for the Group.
David is the eldest son of Kaja and Vincent van Walt who are the owners of Van Walt Limited. David is 42 and married with 2 children. He holds a degree from the University of Plymouth in Business Information Management Systems. David joined IBM straight from university and progressed with them for eleven years before moving to a specialist foreign exchange settlement bank, CLS, in Docklands, London. He was with CLS for ten years and resigned from his position there as Head of Service Management to join Van Walt. David brings with him vast big-business experience which will be invaluable to the Company.
For the foreseeable future David will be in training and slowly but surely he will be weaned into his new role. When that has been achieved, and it is likely to be two to three years, Vincent will step down as Managing Director and take up a new position as Chairman of the Board and by then will no longer be responsible for day to day management or the setting of strategy, both of which will reside with David.
Whereas David will be based at our Headquarters in Haslemere, Surrey, he will responsible for the whole Van Walt Group; UK, Spain, New Zealand and South Africa. He looks forward to this new challenge and is excited about getting to know our customers and suppliers and hopes to see some of them as soon as the current travel restrictions permit this.
The Requirement: To monitor the groundwater and water level in and around a landfill site.
Solution: Deployment of a vanwaltDataHub connected to Keller sensors to provide information every 15 minutes which is then uploaded hourly and alarm notifications sent directly to the site managers for immediate action to ensure the facility is running effectively.
The Requirement: Flow rate of streams determine water abstraction permissions to the ski field operator who requires water for snow making. The regulator requires daily data.
Solution: Flumes are installed to derive water flow data. Using the alarms functionality a water pump is either switched on or off. Data is automatically forwarded to the regulator by FTP. A similar system is also used to switch off the pumps when the turbidity is too high and could damage the pumps.
The Requirement: Large sluice gates between lake and river affect the level of the adjacent river when they are opened. The regulator wishes to establish the effect.
Solution: Installation to record data every 5 seconds with an accuracy better than 5mm. Uploads every 30 minutes to our server and daily transfer of data by FTP to the regulator.
The Requirement: A research project monitoring the soil moisture on a small, uninhabited island in the Atlantic, just off the coast of Spain where the cost and difficulty of getting to the island was far in excess of installing a system that could relay the data back to the mainland without having to go to site.
Solution: Deployment of multiple, buried Soil Moisture probes - HydraProbes - connected to a single vanwaltDataHub. The batteries in the DataHub topped up with a solar panel and the installation protected with a perimeter fence. Data is collected hourly and uploaded once a day for analysis.

The Requirement: Part of the infrastructure is below the water level and could be subject to flooding. Dewatering pumps on the adjacent properties exacerbates the problem.
Solution: A number of Van Walt Data Collection Systems monitor the water levels. Alarms have been set so all parties receive an early warning that flooding could occur.
