Do not underestimate the usefulness of an auger. These hand tools are simple and efficient, and with the right auger for your soil conditions, a sample can be collected more quickly and with less effort than using a mechanical device.
Soil augers have been around for half a century but still play an indispensable role in environmental research both above and below the water table. Even today these instruments are hand forged in Holland to a perfectly designed shape for optimal drilling. Each is made from non-toxic steel so there is no risk of contamination of your sample and most types can be extended with extension rods for augering up to 10m depth, depending on the soil conditions, depth of the groundwater and what materials the auger has to pass through.
Over the years many different auger models have been developed to create the optimum design for various soil types, from clay to sand; riverside augers for hard, stiff soils; stony soil auger for soils with a large gravel content; soft soil augers and gouge augers for sampling peat and soft clays.
The golden rule when using a hand auger is always sample per layer, never mix your soil horizons and always be sure to avoid the contamination of deeper layers.
We supply a range of augers, available in sets that include different auger heads, extension rods, utility probes, measuring tape, handles, maintenance equipment and a carrying case, or individually – a great way to start your environmental research toolkit. So whatever your need or budget we can help you find the right auger, call us on 01428 661 660 to discuss your specific requirements.
Environmental monitoring has developed considerably over the years. From the time when a consultant went out monthly or quarterly with a dip tape to monitor the groundwater level in a borehole, wind forward...
