Window Sampling

window samplingsoil column cylinder

Where extensive and repetitive sampling is necessary, window sampling provides a fast, non destructive, low disturbance sample collection system. Depths of up to 10 metres are possible in a variety of soils above the water table. Window sampling is used successfully in geographical and archaeological research as well as by soil surveyors, subsidence specialists and environmental researchers. Window sampling consists of the percussion hammer such as the Atlas Copco Cobra TT and heavy duty gouge auger chambers (the window samplers). The chambers are typically 1 metre long and sampling takes place in a stepwise fashion; large diameter first then progressively with the smaller diameter gouges. Special samplers are available to take virtually undisturbed samples in a liner.
