Van Walt ‘in the field’

the Sundarbans, India

Van Walt - In the jungle … in the Sundarbans, India

From the photographs taken by Vincent and Satish we can see the Sunderbans are incredible beautiful but, for the less adventurous, the area is populated by the famous, but nearly extinct man-eating Bengali tigers, snakes and mosquitoes.

The team was using Van Walt’s Stitz corer, to retrieve sediment samples from inhabited and uninhabited islands down to a depth of approximately 6 metres. The samples were captured in a liner to be sent back to Belfast for more in depth research.

Van Walt has over 20 years experience of taking samples in very different conditions and, as part of the purchase of percussion drilling equipment, we include onsite training - even in India!  Feedback this time round endorsed the service: “we could not have done what was achieved without your sterling services” and “You will be at the top of the needed list next time and It was great to work with you Vincent and without a doubt the experience and expertise you brought to the coring made everything all the more possible, I can’t thank you enough for that”.

This project is on-going and a return trip is planned for 2011 and, fingers crossed, we may even be invited back!  For more information and photographs read Vincent’s blog.
