What floats your boat?

It’s interesting isn’t it, you think you know someone and then you find out their hobby is collecting model buses and you just can’t quite believe that the friend you thought you knew, who is a highly regarded consultant; enthusiastic cyclist and triathlete; a real Boden family man and good friend reads Model Collector Magazine in the evenings and has www.modelbuszone.co.uk on his list of favourites!

Then I thought about what interests me, who do I follow on Twitter and I realised that my friends would be aghast to know I avidly follow #groundwater and #environmental research Twitter feeds; have contributed to forums on LinkedIn on topics such as ‘Is anyone aware of any PEER REVIEWED or US Government publications on actual groundwater contamination incidents resulting from hydraulic fracturing?’  And I get excited when the subject of groundwater is featured on the Today programme or other BBC news!

I  comfort myself with the knowledge that I do this because it’s my work and isn’t it right and proper that I have an understanding of what’s happening and what’s current in the sector into which we are selling equipment – but then I should fess-up because I can’t deny I find it interesting!

Maps of groundwater supplies, stories about groundwater reserves being depleted, dry wells in India http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2012/08/13/our-oversized-groundwater-footprint/ and the discovery of huge groundwater resources in African http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17775211 are important.  For too long water has been an under-valued resource in the UK but if you live in Africa, where there are still more than 300 million people who don’t have access to safe drinking water, the amount, level and quality of groundwater is vital.

Note to self – we all have our own idiosyncrasies and that’s what makes us interesting!  So whatever floats your boat – that’s fine!
